These days most women give birth to her child in the presence of medical professionals, or doctors in well-equipped hospitals, but 7 out of 1000 births result in birth injuries. As new-borns immune system is not well developed, they get infected very easily. Their bones are very fragile and break even by slight pressure. Because of these two reasons, new born are infected more severely as compared to adults. These injuries can have the permanent damaging effect on the new born.
These injuries are the result of the negligence of the doctors, or other medical professionals. Caput succedaneum:

Cephalohematoma:
The area of bleeding between bone and fibrous covering is known as cephalohematoma. It occurs as lump on baby’s head after some hours of birth. It takes two weeks or three months to disappear. In severe cases, jaundice occurs because of excessive bleeding.
Bruising/forceps marks:
Bruising appears on baby’s scalp as he/she passes through the birth canal and encounters the mother’s pelvic bone or tissues. Forceps used during delivery causes temporary bruises to form on the baby’s face or head. Vacuum extraction method used during delivery also causes scalp bruising or laceration.
Sub-conjunctival haemorrhage:
Disruption of small blood vessels of baby’s eyes in known as Sub-conjunctival haemorrhage. Bright red band appears around the iris in one or both eyes. This is very common and does not damage the eye. Redness disappears in a week or ten days.
Facial paralysis:
During labour, pressure on the baby’s face causes facial nerves to injure. Forceps use can also do this. Injury is seen when the baby weeps. If the nerve bruised, paralysis recovers in a few days, but if the nerve is ruptured, surgery is the treatment for it.
Brachial palsy:
Brachial plexus (nerves of arms and hands) injury causes brachial palsy. Shoulder dystocia (difficulty in delivering baby’s shoulder) causes brachial plexus. The baby’s arm and shoulder do not rotate. These cases usually recover easily in 24 hours without any therapy. If bruising occurs around nerves, movement of shoulder occurs after few months. In severe cases when tearing of nerves occurs, permanent damage develops. During healing process, special exercises are also done.
Fractures:
Fractures usually occur during labour. Most common of which are fractures of the clavicle. Clavicle fracture occurs during delivering the baby’s shoulder. Baby feels pain in moving the arm. Healing occurs quickly. If fracture is painful, fewer movements should be done.
